“Now Let Me Be Black”
“I have been white. Now let me be Black.”
Womyn’s Words (1988-1993) was an annual publication sponsored by the Bowdoin Women’s Association. The magazine featured art, poetry, prose, and photography submitted by Bowdoin women. This piece offers the poignant perspective of a Black woman demanding to learn about Black culture and history without the influence of white hegemony. She articulates the ways that American education and history books tell stories of white conquest and Black oppression when Black history is truly dynamic, bountiful, and powerful.
