Illustrated with sixty-nine wood-cuts by Christoffel Jegher.
Nieremberg, a seventeenth-century Jesuit, became professor of natural history at the Imperial College of Madrid and wrote widely and vividly about natural history. This book , which describes the animals, plants, and minerals of the 'New World,' especially in Mexico, marks the first comprehensive, reliably illustrated natural history of America. Nieremberg based his work chiefly on manuscripts recorded by Francisco Hernandez during his 1570 expedition to New Spain.
