{"id":1050,"date":"2013-12-30T00:01:21","date_gmt":"2013-12-30T04:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.bowdoin.edu\/arch\/civil-war-blog\/?p=1050"},"modified":"2025-05-11T12:12:35","modified_gmt":"2025-05-11T12:12:35","slug":"december-30-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/2013\/12\/30\/december-30-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"December 30, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Camp.\u00a0 Did not \u201cturn in\u201d till after twelve last night.\u00a0 Slept well.\u00a0 Cleaned up somewhat before breakfast, though had cleaned up my gun before.\u00a0 After breakfast gave away what hard-tack I had left.\u00a0 Many of our boys got out of rations yesterday.\u00a0 Mine lasted well.\u00a0 Relieved a half past twelve.\u00a0 Corporal Loring and I came in together.\u00a0 Called at Mr. Bolen\u2019s, but got no cabbage\u2014two S[harp] Shooters getting ahead of us.\u00a0 Rested at Widow _____\u2019s[!] beyond the brick church.\u00a0 Saw the only young man I have seen in the South.\u00a0 All are old men that I find at home, the young ones having taken up arms.\u00a0 This young man pretended to be sick.\u00a0 I believe he is a guerilla.\u00a0 Saw a negro near Mr Rixie\u2019s or Rixey\u2019s 101 yrs. of age last Christmas, an intelligent old darkey.\u00a0 He wishes to live long enough to see all his children, five of which he has, free. One reply to a remark of mine was quite apt and witty.\u00a0 In conversation I remarked \u201cWhy not you favor the south, your massa does.\u201d\u00a0 He and me are two colors he quickly and aptly replied.\u00a0 During his life he had been used well part of the time but not always.\u00a0 Cut across by Mrs. Bradford\u2019s, of whom I have heard so much lately.\u00a0 She is secesh.\u00a0 Her husband is a prisoner somewhere North.\u00a0 One of her darkies said she did not use them well once, but does better now.\u00a0 War will make changes in the condition of the negro.\u00a0 God be praised!\u00a0 Saw one regular \u201choggish nigger.\u201d\u00a0 Reached camp at four o\u2019clock, having been three hours coming from Mr. Bolen\u2019s here through the mud.\u00a0 Hungry enough.\u00a0 Two papers and one letter waiting my arrival.\u00a0 Expected more.\u00a0 Don\u2019t see why I don\u2019t hear from home.\u00a0 Call from cousin George Jones, who arrived last night.\u00a0 Had a good chat with him.\u00a0 Glad he has arrived.\u00a0\u00a0 Called to see the Dr.\u00a0 Found him quite sick.\u00a0 Wrote a letter for Lieut.
