{"id":1114,"date":"2013-06-13T09:00:48","date_gmt":"2013-06-13T13:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.bowdoin.edu\/arch\/civil-war-blog\/?p=1114"},"modified":"2025-05-16T16:26:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T16:26:57","slug":"june-13-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/2013\/06\/13\/june-13-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"June 13, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/03\/16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1115 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/03\/16-205x300.jpg\" alt=\"16\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/03\/16-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/03\/16-768x1124.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/03\/16-700x1024.jpg 700w, https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2013\/03\/16.jpg 1603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a>Saturday.\u00a0 Had baked beans for breakfast which were much relished by us all.\u00a0 One of Co. \u201cA\u201d came in this morning, &amp; reports that the nine other missing men of their Co. are all alive &amp; near the enemy\u2019s breastworks, but have had nothing to eat since yesterday morning.\u00a0 He is going to try to get back to them with some provisions.\u00a0 A small mail came in just after breakfast, containing three letters from home (from Father, mother, &amp; Pamelia, all dated May 25<sup>th<\/sup>).\u00a0 I thank our heavenly Father that he has preserved the lives &amp; health of all the loved ones at home, &amp; give them all things needful for their comfort &amp; happiness.\u00a0 May he grant that we may all meet again on the shores of time.\u00a0 All but one of Co. \u201cA\u201d\u2019s men have just got in safely.\u00a0 Came out this morning in command of the picket guard.\u00a0 Sharp musketry firing all the forenoon.\u00a0\u00a0 About need the cannon &amp; mortars began to work, &amp; the sounds indicate that the batteries are busy on a considerable portion of the line.\u00a0 Whether the general bombardment has begun, I cannot yet determine (1 o\u2019clock).\u00a0 <!--more-->The works appears to have opened in earnest all along the line&#8211;the mortar boats on the river sending their huge shells over the enemy\u2019s works, &amp; the guns on this part of the line are firing every five minutes.\u00a0 Lord, prosper the enterprise, and permit us speedily to rejoice at the capture of this stronghold of rebellion, for thy name\u2019s sake.\u00a0 After the bombardment had lasted about 1 \u00bd hours, a cessation was ordered (to await the result of a flag of truce sent over to the enemy, it is said) &amp; there has been but little artillery firing since, though the musketry firing has been almost incessant for the last two hours.\u00a0 (Now sunset) I have taken a nap here on my post this afternoon as I do not expect to sleep at all tonight.\u00a0 I think it quite likely that we may be ordered to move against the enemy in the morning if not during the night.\u00a0 The Lord have us in his most holy keeping.\u00a0 I watched till about midnight, when the pickets were relieved by Capt.
