{"id":1120,"date":"2013-06-15T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2013-06-15T13:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.bowdoin.edu\/arch\/civil-war-blog\/?p=1120"},"modified":"2025-05-16T16:25:28","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T16:25:28","slug":"june-15-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/2013\/06\/15\/june-15-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"June 15, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday.\u00a0 Thus was passed the most terrible Sabbath of my life.\u00a0 The dead &amp; wounded lay everywhere, &amp; the stretchers were carrying them all day.\u00a0 I can form no estimate of the loss, but it must have been very large, several hundred.\u00a0 Sergeant Allen of Co. \u201cE\u201d was instantly killed on the charge, &amp; several in other companies wounded, but God in mercy spared all my company, for which I desire to render him the highest gratitude of which my heart is capable.\u00a0 We can account for every man except F. Holbrook, who has not yet come in, but I think he is safe, as he fell out before we reached the most dangerous spot.\u00a0 Have not paper to record a tenth part of the incidents of the day, but they will live in my memory while I live.\u00a0 God forbid that we should be called to such another day\u2019s experience.\u00a0 I think by this time that the hope of carrying the place by a charge is abandoned\u2014at any rate till more suitable place[] for it can be found.\u00a0 Our Reg\u2019t. behaved well through the day, &amp; Col. Jerrard was as fearless as a man could be, exposing himself continually\u2014no man could have done better.\u00a0 No officer of the Reg\u2019t. faltered for a moment, or or[!] showed the least disposition to shirk his duty.\u00a0 Holbrook reached camp about noon unharmed.\u00a0 Haskell has been sent to Baton Rouge with other wounded.\u00a0 He is not very badly hurt, I think.\u00a0 Col. J. was notified this P.M. that he is \u201cunder arrest\u201d\u2014supposed to be for disobeying an order to charge over the breastworks yesterday P.M.\u00a0 Had he made the charge at the time &amp; place, &amp; led it himself, (as he certainly would) I presume every man of us would at this time have been either dead or a prisoner.\u00a0 Old[!] Regiments had tried it in the morning, &amp; failed, &amp; every one of our Reg\u2019t. officers &amp; men feels that the Col. was right, and not one doubts his courage.\u00a0 The officers held a meeting, &amp; chose a committee of three (Capts. Case, Bolton &amp; Gilman) to assure Col.
