Bread.\u00a0 A day of loafing.\u00a0 Found opportunity for reading my testament and prayer.\u00a0 My chums having no objection I had prayer last night just before retiring.\u00a0 Am learning the demoralisation of camp life.\u00a0 Gambling, stealing, card playing, swearing and obscenity are prevalent.\u00a0 Lost my dipper this noon, and was advised to steal one to pay for it.\u00a0 Perhaps I shall have to steal, but it shall be my last resort.\u00a0 Wrote two letters, one home, and one to B&#8211;.\u00a0 Marched to Paymaster\u2019s and received one hundred dollars, my state bounty.\u00a0 Then ordered on board the Hester which took us to Portland.\u00a0 Here we took the Lewiston for Long Island, Boston Harbor.\u00a0 There were ninety of us, perhaps ninety-two, as two escaped or were concealed on board the boat before we arrived at our \u2026 destination.\u00a0 Our quarters were between decks in which we were placed more like animals than men.\u00a0 We fared no better, if so well, than our neighbors, some sheep.\u00a0 The officers in command of us were Capt. Illsley of the 15<sup>th<\/sup> and Lieut.
