F, Capt. Perry.\u00a0 Morrell of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> came over to see me.\u00a0 Had a nice time for half an hour or so.\u00a0 Pitched tent with Auguste and Leavitt, both conscripts from Aroostook.\u00a0 Received eight days\u2019 rations.\u00a0 It made me feel blue to receive them, especially the pork.<\/p>\n<p>Two letters from Louise and a talk with Dick made me feel better.\u00a0 Dr. Manson, and Lieut. Stevens of the 5<sup>th<\/sup> were over here today.\u00a0 All have been surprised to see me here, but glad.\u00a0 Commenced to perform duty today.\u00a0 And now I am fairly in the Army, I pray God to watch over and protect me.\u00a0 I hope to be kept from temptation.\u00a0 Many say I must learn to smoke, steal, swear and drink, but I would never have entered this army if I had thought I had got to do any such thing.\u00a0 May God aid me in my endeavor to do right.\u00a0 We have warm days here, but cold nights.\u00a0 There is considerable dew.\u00a0 No rain yet.\u00a0 We have slept pretty comfortably, but some time have been a little cold.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archivesspace.bowdoin.edu\/repositories\/2\/resources\/430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diary of Edwin Emery [Edwin Emery Diaries and Memoir] <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conscripts allotted to the several companies.\u00a0 I had my choice and took\u00a0 Co.
