{"id":1446,"date":"2013-10-05T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-05T04:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.bowdoin.edu\/arch\/civil-war-blog\/?p=1446"},"modified":"2025-05-13T12:16:06","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T12:16:06","slug":"october-5-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/2013\/10\/05\/october-5-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"October 5, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was quite a drunk last night.\u00a0 One in our Company, and one below here disturbed my slumbers.\u00a0 Whiskey is a great bane in the army, and a fearful demoralizer in Camp.\u00a0 Nearly every day some case of drunkenness occurs.\u00a0 This morning part of the sixth corps left.\u00a0 A part left not long ago.\u00a0 Last week the 11<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; 12<sup>th<\/sup> left, it is reported, for Chat[t]anooga.\u00a0 We are drawn up here in line of battle with a second line to support the first.\u00a0 The 6<sup>th<\/sup> Corps occupies the right, the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, ours, comes next, the 5<sup>th<\/sup> next, and then the 1<sup>st<\/sup> protecting [illegible].\u00a0 Pleasanton\u2019s cavalry corps are in front, supported by the 2d corps.\u00a0 All these are fighting corps.\u00a0 This corps hopes Gen. Sickles will take command soon.\u00a0 Gen. French is an arrogant, and repulsive officer.\u00a0 He is a regular \u201cbrandy blossom\u201d or a \u201ctwo gallon whiskey keg.\u201d\u00a0 He is bald-headed, and red-faced, smooth-shaven, with the exception of a heavy moustache.\u00a0 As he uncovered his head yesterday when he rode by;, I thought he looked very much like Gen.
