{"id":1557,"date":"2013-10-20T00:01:24","date_gmt":"2013-10-20T04:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.bowdoin.edu\/arch\/civil-war-blog\/?p=1557"},"modified":"2025-05-13T11:55:01","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T11:55:01","slug":"october-20-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/2013\/10\/20\/october-20-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"October 20, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Camp near Greenwich.\u00a0 Reveille about three.\u00a0 Commenced moving at six.\u00a0 Fell out on a short time when the company commenced double quick.\u00a0 Heel very sore.<\/p>\n<p>Forded a stream that took the boys to the middle.\u00a0 I rode over on the\u00a0 Dr\u2019s horse.\u00a0 Crossed the rail-road where the rails &amp; sleepers had been torn up by the rebels.\u00a0 Rebel graves a short distance from where we halted.\u00a0 Forded another stream.\u00a0 Attempted to ride over with the\u00a0 Dr.\u00a0 With one foot in the stirrup rode over.\u00a0 Having missed the road, had to ford the stream again.\u00a0 Got a ride over on an ambulance.\u00a0 Kept but little with the company.\u00a0 Passed over the same road we did last Tuesday &amp; Wednesday.\u00a0 At Greenwich noticed the finest establishment I have seen in Virginia.\u00a0 Cannot see why we were hurried so.\u00a0 The manner in which we are marched is unwise, inhuman, and barbarous.\u00a0 They load and drive us like Jack-mules.\u00a0 Have the finest camp we have had.\u00a0 An open smooth field, rails &amp; water convenient for use.\u00a0 Foggy this morning.\u00a0 Fair and hot the rest of the day.\u00a0 Travelled 15 miles today.\u00a0 Seem to be moving towards the Rappahan[n]ock.\u00a0 Spelled with 2 n\u2019s also.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archivesspace.bowdoin.edu\/repositories\/2\/resources\/430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diary of Edwin Emery [Edwin Emery Diaries and Memoir]\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Camp near Greenwich.\u00a0 Reveille about three.\u00a0 Commenced moving at six.\u00a0 Fell out on a short time when the company commenced double quick.\u00a0 Heel very sore.
