And Lieut. Stevens.\u00a0 A pleasant chat.\u00a0 Also a call from Chaplain Adams of the Maine 5<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Wish we could have a Chaplain like him..\u00a0 Understand we are to have a Unitarian Chaplain.\u00a0 Mr. A. informed me that I have been appointed Sergeant today.\u00a0 Somehow I don\u2019t want a Sergeant\u2019s position at present, and then again I do.\u00a0 However, I take what is given me.\u00a0 If I am appointed, it is unknown to me only as I learn it from Mr. A. \u201cTime will tell\u201d as our old friend Rines used to say.<\/p>\n<p>Received my Sergeant\u2019s warrant tonight from the hand of Lieut. Richards after hearing it announced on dress parade that I was appointed.\u00a0 My warrant dates from Nov. 1, 1863.\u00a0 The old men do not like it, nor can I blame them, but they ought not find fault with me, for I am not to blame for receiving any appointment bettering my condition, provided I can perform the duty that must necessarily come with it.\u00a0 Had chance to express myself to Sergeant Hobbs, since which I have felt better.\u00a0 Shall endeavor to do my duty in every respect, and ask not whether it is popular with the boys or not.<\/p>\n<p>The sun rose bright and clear this morning, and shortly after passed into a could\u2014at home a cure sign of rain.\u00a0 It rained a very little about sunrise, since which it has been changeable weather, now fair, now overcast and cloudy.\u00a0 Hope to keep above the envy manifested by ignoramuses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archivesspace.bowdoin.edu\/repositories\/2\/resources\/430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diary of Edwin Emery [Edwin Emery Diaries and Memoir]\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Camp DeTrobriand.
