{"id":47,"date":"2013-01-04T09:00:09","date_gmt":"2013-01-04T09:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.bowdoin.edu\/arch\/civil-war-blog\/?p=47"},"modified":"2025-05-19T16:13:39","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T16:13:39","slug":"january-4-1863","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sca.bowdoin.edu\/civil-war-blog\/2013\/01\/04\/january-4-1863\/","title":{"rendered":"January 4, 1863"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jan. 4th.\u00a0 The sun rose clear &amp; bright this morning, &amp; the weather has been pleasant all [day], so that the effects of the rain are less evident than I supposed they would be.\u00a0 The roads become muddy with a little rain, but dry up quickly after the sun comes out.\u00a0 About breakfast time Mr. Langley came in to inform me that George, his brother, died at half past two o\u2019clock this morning.\u00a0 I went at once to the Quartermaster &amp; made arrangements for a coffin, &amp; Lieut. Richardson went out to town with two men to dig a grave.\u00a0 I walked out about 10 o\u2019clock &amp; was so exhausted by the walk that I was obliged to lie down &amp; rest for an hour so two.\u00a0 After making some arrangements for the burial, I started to return to camp, intended to return to the funeral with the Company.\u00a0 When near camp I met the Chaplain going out, who offered me his horse to ride, which I accepted with gratitude, for I was nearly beaten out.\u00a0 Came into camp &amp; got a little tea &amp; some crackers.\u00a0 The Company, with a portion of Co. G, started for town in advance of me.\u00a0 I than rode out to the Hospital where we formed a procession &amp; marched to the graveyard, where we lowered our late comrade to his last resting place.
