Genesis of the Africana Studies Program, 1968

Created in 1969, the Africana Studies Program (formerly Afro-American Studies), is a multidisciplinary academic, co-curricular program designed to bring the scholarly approaches and disciplines to bear on an understanding of African-American life. The program runs lecture series, maintains a library and resource center, and functions as a clearinghouse for local community groups interested in African-American history.

Learn more about development of Africana Studies, the John Brown Russwurm House, and the Black Student Union in the digital exhibit Tension/Tenacity: Africana Studies at 50 curated by Lucy Ryan '19.
