In May 1816, 10,000 men voted for separation and 6,000 voted against; the General Court of Massachusetts dismissed the election because too few eligible voters had participated. Another election in September yielded similar results: 11,927 for separation and 7,000 against. Massachusetts would only count the vote if 55.5% of voters participated and only 53% of eligible voters had gone to the polls.
