This copy is signed by Dr. John Hubbard (1794-1869) who, in 1843, had just been elected to the Maine Senate. As Maine’s 22nd Governor, serving from May 8, 1850 to January 5, 1853, Hubbard signed the Maine Law (1851), outlawing liquor traffic. He also advocated for free lands in Maine, agricultural schools, reform schools, and education for women. Hubbard’s son, Thomas Hamlin Hubbard (Class of 1867), funded the construction of Hubbard Hall, Bowdoin’s first dedicated library facility.
