Geographer Moses Greenleaf (1777-1834) is often referred to as Maine’s first mapmaker. Greenleaf dedicated himself to surveying the state, believing that Maine’s economic and civil success would be best supported by a clear understanding of its geographic, economic, and demographic resources. Though Greenleaf’s Survey nearly ruined him financially, the Maine Legislature purchased many copies and disseminated the work across the State, helping to solidify Greenleaf’s legacy. Bowdoin’s copy, on display here, was presented to the Library by the State of Maine.
