Samuel E. Smith (1788-1860) served as Maine’s 10th governor from 1832 to 1834), during which time the controversy over the northeast boundary of the United States came to a head. While governor, Smith was trustee ex-officio of Bowdoin (1831-1834). Edward Kavanagh (1795-1844) was a United States Representative (1831-1835) and, briefly, Governor of Maine (1843-1844). Kavanagh was one of the four Maine commissioners involved in the 1842 negotiations that led to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, ending the northeast boundary dispute.
