Salary Inequities
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Gender Equity Survey was required by the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) and the Higher Education Act Amendments (HEA) as an effort to identify and prevent gender-based discrimination in athletics. The survey included information regarding recruitment budgets, athletic scholarships, facility and equipment expenses, and coach salaries for men’s, women’s, and coed teams. In 1996, there was a stark pay discrepancy between coaches of men’s and women’s teams at Bowdoin: the average salary for a head men’s team coach was about $6,500 more than that of a head women’s coach, and the men’s assistant coach salary was double that of the salary of a women’s assistant coach.
