The Fight for Coeducation

The Transition to Coeducation

The Transition to Coeducation

Early in the second semester of coeducation, the Orient polled the campus about the transition. 535 students and twenty-four faculty members responded, and the results illustrate a Bowdoin community largely supportive of coeducation. However, the poll results also include a number of sexist comments about Bowdoin women: one student describes them as “dull and lifeless” while another criticizes women’s intelligence, saying “they’re dumb, but they are good tools. The girls have preserved my sanity, bless their dumb little hearts.”
