Menstruation Products in Campus Bathrooms
In 2017, Annie Glenn ’17 and Sophie Binenfeld ’17 started an initiative to provide free menstruation products in campus bathrooms with funds they were granted from the Bowdoin Student Government’s Good Ideas Fund. Aware of the Pink Tax – the artificially inflated cost of products marketed to women – Glenn and Binenfeld brought attention to the discrepancy in which “women’s” personal hygiene products cost an average of 13% more than “men’s” products. They collaborated with housekeeping to supply the women’s, men’s, and gender inclusive bathrooms with free products, so gender non-conforming people and trans men have equal access. Today, products are available in most central bathrooms on campus.
