Campus Safety and Security
“If you think the lighting is bad now, you should have seen it back then.”
In a 1980 interview, former President Roger Howell reflected on the transition to coeducation and the unanticipated need for increased security. He discussed the lack of campus lighting and Bowdoin’s naivety in believing a rural campus did not need established security. Between 1995 and 1997, Bowdoin introduced its Blue Light System in which blue lights indicate call boxes at various campus locations where a person pushes the button, and security will immediately arrive at that location to provide assistance.
