In October of 1968, Government Professor John Rensenbrink wrote to Acting President Athern P. Dagget to make the case for an Afro-American Studies program (AAS). In the memo, he included a list of points about the “present situation” at Bowdoin, including that “the curriculum, in fact and apparently in intention, remains insensitive to black culture and civilization.”
